Weekend for Wildlife has played a vital role in championing wildlife conservation across Georgia for 23 years. This annual event has raised nearly $8 million for DNR Wildlife Resources Division’s Nongame Conservation Section.
The Nongame Conservation Section receives no state appropriations for its mission to conserve native Georgia animals not legally hunted, fished for or trapped, as well as rare native plants and natural habitats.
Weekend for Wildlife is central to that mission, and even more so during tough economic times.
Yet, these two days also offer guests an unparalleled experience.
Set at the Cloister resort, the weekend opens with Friday field trips that explore coastal habitats (including one adventure by kayak!), bird research, nature photography, shooting sports and even the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center. Friday evening features a cocktail reception and silent auction where you can bid on weekend excursions, wildlife memorabilia and exotic artwork found nowhere else in Georgia.
On Saturday, biologists and other experts will lead you on outdoor adventures to see natural areas and wildlife. New adventures for 2012 include a half-day tour of Cannon’s Point rich ecological and cultural resources.
We’ll also return to exclusive Little Saint Simons Island, and dig into the history – literally – of an 1800s sugar mill on Sapelo Island. Or, you can tour memorable places like Kings Bay Naval Submarine Base or The Cloister’s kitchens and wine cellar!
Many trips are family friendly. We even offer a children’s banquet Friday night. So please bring the whole family!
Saturday ends in a black tie-optional, Cloister-cuisine banquet and an exciting verbal auction. The food is exquisite, the company intriguing and the bidding intense. Weekend for Wildlife auctions are packed with treasures such as unique art and jewelry.
Check out the “Trips” tab on this website to read descriptions of Friday and Saturday trips. Please pick your favorites and sign up as soon as possible with this Registration Brochure .
